Quote

There is a quote in library land that goes

"If there is not something in this library that offends you then I am not doing my job."

What do you think?

Well, I don't know that I necessarily agree with the quote, but I do agree with the overall message of what it is trying to convey---that libraries should not be a place of censorship.

We are fortunate to live in a free country where freedom of speech reigns.

I do however believe in personal censorship/filters. If I don't want my kid to read something, I will have that conversation with them and explain why. If I personally am not supportive of an idea/book, then I won't read it—but I wouldn’t deny someone else their right to read it.

I feel that deprivation causes interest in the very thing that is being deprived.
A current example is the Newbury winner "The Higher Power of Lucky,” by Susan Patron. It has created a lot of controversy because it uses the biologically correct name for the male anatomy.

I had heard so much about the scandal it was causing that I couldn't wait to read the book. Again, all of the hullabaloo made me want to read it.

Well, after seeing the "infamous" word on the 1st and about 9th page of the book, I realized that the actual story didn’t hold my attention. I would have ever even picked up the book if it hadn't been for the controversy surrounding it.
