Newbery controversy

The Higher Power of Lucky not only won the Newbery award but is the center of controversy due to the use of the word scrotum. School librarians around the country are taking the books off the shelf.

The link will bring you to an NPR article about the controversy.

I've read about this controversy in quite a few magazines/journals. I don't understand the shock value of using proper anatomical terms and why people would want to ban the book just for one word. Now, if it had been written with a euphemistic word, then that probably wouldn't have been a problem. I’m guessing that kids read the word, didn’t know what it meant, and asked their parents. Instead of taking the time to actually talk to their kids and explain what it meant, it’s a lot easier to have the book banned. Ridiculous!
