The Eyes of the Emperor

How do you think the book The Eyes of the Emperor could be aligned to curriculum?

I'm not sure I'd use the whole book if I were a Social Studies teacher, but I definitely would use excerpts while teaching about the Japanese relocation camps in WWII. This book showed me a new side to the treatment of Japanese Americans that I never learned.

That's a good idea Jen...to take excerpts out of the book and discuss those with the students.

I was shocked that Japanese-Americans were treated in such an inhumane way in WW2, by OTHER Americans!

What really disturbs me about the book is that the protagonist voluntarily enters the army, and then his own loyalty to America is in question.

I think by using excerpts in the classroom, some good discussions could be had about racial profiling during war times, as well as the present.

I agree with the previous two posts in regards to curriculum, I just wanted to comment on what I thought as I read:
What an eye-opening book! I know I had breifly learned about the Japanese relocation camps growing up, but I never realized about our own solidiers getting this type of treatment. Everyone- their country and their government- has things they can be ashamed of. I think it is important to learn about it though so it has less of a chance of being repeated. Also we must realize that we as Americans are not immune to doing these sorts of things. Many people view the Holocaust as something that only sick people could take part in- but think of the YAL novel, "The Wave," based on a true story. Wow- another eye-opener...

One of my last years in the classroom I had the students read the Wave, Daniel's Story (Holocaust) and the Giver and make connections which they did. Adding the treatment of the Japanese during WWII in America would be great!
